Week 1 in Chile: Bonding Weekend

On the move

Like I mentioned in my last blog post, I am part of The Nomad MBA for the next three months. I decided to start a small series of posts recapping every week of this program. In addition, I will publish posts covering our remarkable experiences: the Bonding Weekend, the Fitness Bootcamp and the Meditation Retreat.

We are spending the first month of our Latin America experience in Valparaíso, Chile. Otherwise known as the Jewel of the Pacific. Definitely a valid nickname for this place. It’s a super colourful, lively, artistic port city situated in the North of Chile by the Pacific coast. The area is known for surfing, vineyards, education and the digital nomad and expat community — the reason why we came here.

The transfers from Santiago to our stunning apartments were organized so we were able to start our three-month adventure without being stressed. Tribe dinner was the first thing on the menu and gave all of us the chance to meet the rest of the group in person. First impressions were great and everyone seemed genuinely nice and interesting. There was so much to talk and laugh about, it felt like we’d known each other forever already.

The start of something great

I woke up super excited the next morning. We had the Bonding Weekend scheduled from Thursday to Sunday to further get to know each other. Probably not a bad idea if you are to spend the next three months together almost 24/7. Each person had prepared a workshop covering whatever topic they chose. People talked about everything from the future of technology, how to build an online-course and refereeing to acrobatic yoga, emotional freedom and creativity. And so much more. My own workshop dealt with manifesting and how to tap into the power of the universe.

But everyone also revealed more and more about themselves during the four days. I am still amazed by how comfortable we all felt around each other. Especially considering we had literally just met.

“The group dynamic is simply incredible. Each person is so open-minded, accepting, caring and supportive

That makes it so much easier to be your authentic self and share what’s going on inside you. In my opinion absolutely essential to make it through the next three months. I honestly couldn’t have wished for a better tribe!

Tears and breakthroughs

Whereas some workshops were mostly informational, some were intense and deeply emotional as well. And while I was hoping to push through some personal internal obstacles during the program, I certainly wouldn’t have expected for it to happen during the first weekend.

In one of their workshops, someone asked us to complete the sentence ‘If I were fearless, I would…’. Maybe you yourself have something popping up in your head straight away or you have to think about it for a while. I, at least, immediately knew the answer to this:

If I were fearless, I would tell people how I really feel. I would express my feelings more openly and act on them

I was also completely overwhelmed by the emotional reaction I had to the exercise. The tears just started coming without me being able to do anything about it. The second step was to share with a partner and it took me more than a minute before I was even able to talk about it.

Then during a workshop later that same day, we talked about trust in ourselves as well as other people. The realisation that there is not a single person in my life that I trust 100% put me directly over the edge again. I wasn’t even aware that I had so many tears in me. But I guess they just had to come out at this point.

Knowing and accepting are two different things

I had been aware of these things for a long time. But putting them out there and speaking them out loud is another level. They suddenly became true. And you can’t ignore them any longer. Something that is equally scary and necessary though if you really want to push through your blockages. That day left me feeling drained and emotionally exhausted. But even more, I felt relieved. Deep down I intuitively knew that I had a real breakthrough. That now, I would be able to address and ultimately release these issues over time.

I truly believe that most of that is due to all these amazing humans I am here with. They created such a protected and accepting atmosphere in a matter of days that makes sharing your innermost fears and desires so easy. And they offer a strong support system. They gave me the space I asked for and the encouraging words and soothing hugs I wasn’t even aware I so badly needed. Having one person like that in your life, let alone 30, is something extremely powerful. With this group, I trust that we can create magic and make anything happen we set our minds to. I am so so excited for the next three months! :)
